ś.p. Irena Dobrzyński

May 27, 1927 – September 5, 2025

Irena Halina Dobrzynski (née Hermanowicz), aged 98, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 5, 2025, at Foothills Country Hospice in Okotoks, AB.

Predeceased by Olek, her devoted husband of nearly 72 years, Irena leaves behind her daughter and son-in-law, two granddaughters, and five great-grandchildren.

Born in Poland, Irena’s early life was marked by both an idyllic childhood and profound hardships during the Second World War. Her family endured deportation to a Soviet prison camp in the Ural Mountains, suffered starvation and typhus as they made their way south through Kazakhstan to join the Free Polish Army in Iran, and found eventual refuge in Africa. After the war, Irena settled in England, where she met and married Olek, and they built a loving home together. In retirement, Irena and Olek joined their daughter and her family in Calgary, AB, becoming active members of the Polish Canadian Seniors Association.

Irena will be fondly remembered for her enduring love and care for her family. She was always eager to share stories of her remarkable life, especially her cherished memories of Africa. Irena’s legacy of resilience and devotion will live on in all who knew and loved her.

Our family wishes to extend a heartfelt appreciation to the staff and volunteers at Foothills Country Hospice who provided compassionate and loving care to Irena during her final weeks.

A private family funeral will be held, with burial to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery (3219 4 St NW, Calgary, AB).
